Small Grant Program in Action
Creating Healthy Hearts
The Creating Healthy Hearts project, developed by Melissa Ohngren,
South Lake High School, and Jill Riedel, South Lake Middle School,
supplies heart rate monitors to 7th - 12th grade students, providing
feedback on the intensity of their physical activity in sports and
general exercise. These monitors give students valuable information
to achieve cardiovascular fitness. The goal of the project is to teach
students the value of a healthy lifestyle. The 2006-2007 school year
marks the second year that students are benefiting from the monitors.

Animal Studies Grant
The Animal Studies Grant, under the direction of Laurie Wood, Avalon
Elementary, will enable second grade students to take virtual field
trips from "All Aboard the Learning Express," created by
several zoological parks. Highlights include learning about the Arctic
and Antarctica, following a dog sled team in the Iditarod, and gaining
hands-on experience dissecting owl pellets and reassembling the remains
of their prey, among other activities. |

Virtual Business Management Program
Teacher Jason Kasparian, South Lake High School, will help his students
develop and manage their own virtual company in the Virtual Business
Management Program. Students will face the realities of business management,
make critical business decisions and evaluate those decisions. Thirty
lifetime computer lab licenses ensure that this program will have
a far-reaching impact on South Lake students for years to come. |
