Through hard work and dedication, last year’s Lancer staff earned over 100 awards in Ohio Scholastic Media Association (OSMA), Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA), and Ball State University (BSU) competitions.
"I think that our staff did well because we had a few hard workers, who dedicated themselves to the paper," editor-in-chief Katie Bimberg, a senior, said. "[The staff] went above and beyond expectations picking up slack when it was needed."
Bimberg earned 18 awards at OSMA, with senior Alex Pawlusiak earning 24.
Journalism adviser Barb Taetsch admitted that the number of awards was unexpected.
"I thought 'Wow!’ . . . they’re such a young staff experience-wise, with most having a year or less of reporting," she said. "They [did] so much better than I imagined they would."
Bimberg agrees.
"It was a challenge motivating new staff members who didn’t fully understand what it took to run a publication," Bimberg said. "We have a smaller staff than most schools, but our few staff members did what they could to make the publication successful. It was quality, not quantity."
